Boondox

Privacy policy

October 14, 2026

Boondox is made by GGRLS Software LLC. It measures how far you are from civilization while the app is open. There is no account.

Location

When you measure, Boondox reads your location on the device. It uses that position to find the nearest place in a chart that already lives in the app, and to estimate sunset. The exact position stays on the device for the reading you are looking at. We do not store it in an account, and we do not read location in the background.

Outside the United States and Canada, the app tells you coverage is unavailable. It still needed your location to know that.

Elevation

If you are online and inside the United States or Canada, Boondox sends that latitude and longitude to Open-Meteo to look up elevation. Open-Meteo is a separate service. Their terms are at open-meteo.com/en/terms.

Ghost footprints

A search can add one to a rough area for the month. Boondox sends the coordinates to our footprints service over HTTPS. That service rounds them to a 0.1 degree cell, about 7 miles from north to south, and stores an anonymous count for that cell and month. It does not store your name, a device identifier, or the exact location.

The app remembers, on your device, which cells it has already counted, so a later search in the same cell does not add another one.

Advertising

Boondox shows one banner ad from Google AdMob. Where Google requires a choice, a consent form appears before the first ad. On iPhone, the system tracking prompt asks whether the advertising identifier may be used. If you decline, the ads are not personalized and that identifier is not sent. On Android, AdMob may use the advertising ID.

We do not receive the advertising identifier on our servers. Google’s privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy. Boondox is not directed at children, and the ads are not child-directed. When About shows Ad privacy choices, you can change a consent decision there.

Photos

If you tap Save image, Boondox writes the survival card into your photo library. We do not upload that image, and we do not read the rest of your photos.

On your device

Boondox saves your appearance and unit choices, and the coarse footprint cells this device has already counted. Deleting the app removes them.

Place data

The United States chart is SimpleMaps business location data, used under CC BY 4.0. The Canada chart is © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the ODbL. Both charts ship inside the app. They are not information about you.

Children

Boondox is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
